how-to: woven wheel stitch

woven wheel (also called woven spider web) is great for making bold circular shapes, flowers and rosettes.

start with a star stitch, using an odd number of straight stitches to form the spokes of the wheel. next, bring your needle up at the center, between two spokes, and slide the needle over one stitch and under the next -- you will not pierce the fabric at all. just weave over, under, over, under -- around and around until the circle is filled in and you reach the end of the spokes. take your needle down under an edge of the weaving to finish.

you may choose to keep the weaving loose and flatter, or you can make it more tightly packed, for a thick and dense flower. you can leave some space in the center for some knots if you’d like, or experiment with using multiple colors in your wheel.
