how-to: split stitch

split stitch is a basic stitch that is typically used for outlines. worked in rows, you’ll be splitting through the center of each previous stitch. it is great for linework and for lettering. split stitch can also be used as a fill stitch if you make parallel rows close together.

you’ll want to keep all of your stitches the same length, and remember that if you’re stitching curved lines, smaller stitches will give you smoother results.

TIP: use an even number of floss strands, so that when you split the stitch, each side of the split is the same thickness.
